Gods toorn vrezen we niet meer, vrije meningsuiting is ons hoogste ideaal en winkelen ons grootste genot. Maar toch, zo beweert Frank Furedi in zijn boek Cultuur van angst, lijken we in ons denken en doen nog veel op onze Middeleeuwse voorouders. Voor elk ongeluk moet een kop rollen.
